CALM is the FLEX
A phonk film where every frame is trying too hard — on purpose.
In a world on fire, CALM is the FLEX.
Sirens, smoke, a skyline on fire, and every piece of flex-culture iconography I could fit into a frame. None of it is the point. The one rule going in: this has to argue something, not just look like something.
That changes what the excess is for. It stops being decoration and becomes setup — every over-the-top frame is a debt the ending has to pay off. If the last shot doesn’t land, the whole thing is just noise with good grain.
AI made excess free. Anyone can generate a burning city before lunch, then ten more. Spectacle used to be the expensive part of filmmaking; now it’s the cheapest part of the process.
Taste has always been the job — what changed is who enforces it. Budget used to be the filter: to burn a city, you had to convince someone it was worth burning. That filter is gone. Whatever restraint the work needs, you bring yourself.
So the scarce skill moved. It’s not “can you make it” anymore — it’s knowing what the thing is actually about, and having the discipline to stop. Restraint is the one thing that doesn’t scale. The film ends on two words, and it’s the hardest thing to hold: CALM IS THE FLEX.
